Measuring Your Windows Correctly for Perfect Custom Fit

Measuring Your Windows Correctly for Perfect Custom Fit

Accurate measurements are the foundation of custom window treatments that function beautifully and fit precisely. Small errors can result in gaps, misalignment, or coverage issues. Taking time to measure carefully ensures your investment will perform exactly as intended.

Gather Your Tools First

You'll need a steel measuring tape, not a fabric one, as fabric tapes can stretch and give inaccurate readings. A level helps ensure your measurements are truly perpendicular. Pencil and paper to record measurements as you work prevent forgetting dimensions. Some people prefer a helper to hold the tape while measuring, especially for larger windows.

Measure Width Multiple Times

Width inconsistency is common in older homes. Measure at the top, middle, and bottom of your window opening. Record all three measurements. Use the smallest measurement as your width for inside-mount applications, ensuring the treatment will fit without binding. For outside-mount treatments, knowing the variations helps determine how much overlap you need for complete coverage.

Measure Height Carefully

Just as with width, measure height at the left, center, and right of your window. Again, record all measurements. For inside-mount applications where the treatment mounts within the frame, use the smallest height measurement. Outside-mount treatments measuring from wall to wall or frame edge to frame edge require different considerations based on your specific treatment type.

Consider Mount Location Before Measuring

Inside-mount treatments fit within the window frame itself, creating a neat, integrated look. Outside-mount treatments attach to the wall or frame exterior, typically providing more complete coverage and light control. Your choice affects how you measure and what dimensions you'll need.

Account for Hardware and Clearance

Think about operational clearance. Cellular shades need space to stack when raised. Roman shades need room for the stacked fold. Curtains on rods need adequate wall space to pull back fully. Measure considering these practical needs, not just the glass area.

Document Everything Clearly

Create a sketch of each window and note all measurements directly on it. Include the window location and any special features like deep sills, trim depth, or obstacles. Include photos from both inside and outside the window if possible. This documentation prevents confusion later and ensures accuracy if a professional needs to reference your measurements.

When to Get Professional Help

Unusually shaped windows, angled walls, or complex situations benefit from professional measurement. If your windows have significant variation between measurements, a professional assessment ensures proper solutions. Some situations require hands-on evaluation that phone or online communication cannot provide adequately.
